year-of-the-oxThe Chinese New Year starts tomorrow and 2009 is the Year of the Ox. According to Chinese legend, the Year of the Ox is a slow but steady year, full of tradition and value. It is considered a conservative year, one where diligence and patience are rewarded. The Year of the Ox is known for bringing stability and growth, as well as an abundant harvest for those who work hard. Those born under the Year of the Ox are known for being ethical, dependable, and enjoying the simple comforts in life.

Red is considered to be the luckiest color in Chinese culture, and it is used in decoration and dress to celebrate the Chinese New Year.

Those born under the Year of the Rooster and the Year of the Snake are most likely to succeed this year. This is good news for me and anyone else born in 1981! Those born under the Year of the Rooster will experience great opportunities this year, reaping the rewards of labour.

Unlike the standard zodiac, where each of the 12 signs correspond to the 12 months (give or take a couple days), the Chinese zodiac has 12 signs that follow a 12-year cycle. Click here to discover your Chinese zodiac sign.

Ironically, the Ox (or Bull) is synonymous with economic prosperity in American culture yet reports are surfacing that the economic climate is not going to recover any time soon. Let’s take a note from the steady Ox andĀ if we work hard and remain patient, hopefully we will see a full harvest this year.

Hard work, diligence, and patience certainly do not sound like a fun and frivolous year, but appreciating the simple things in life and reaping and abundant harvest sound pretty Sweet to me. Here’s to hoping for a steady and prosperous new year!
